Two Pedestrians Killed in Separate Early-Sunday Austin Crashes: One on I-35 in North Austin, One in a South 1st Street Hit-and-Run (AUSTIN CAPITAL NEWS)

A pedestrian was killed on Interstate 35 in North Austin early Sunday, authorities said. Austin-Travis County Emergency Medical Services crews arrived at the scene at 12:20 a.m. in the 8000 block of North Interstate 35 Southbound, just north of the U.S. 183 exit, and pronounced the adult patient dead at the scene, FOX 7 Austin reported. The crash forced closures along the southbound lanes of I-35 while emergency crews cleared the area, and motorists were advised to expect delays and seek alternate routes.

Shortly before 1 a.m., across town, Austin police officers responded to a second collision involving a pedestrian, in the 4100 block of South 1st Street in South Austin, FOX 7 Austin reported. First responders found the pedestrian unconscious at the scene; paramedics took the victim to a nearby hospital, where they died. The vehicle that struck the pedestrian left the scene without stopping to render aid, and investigators are searching for a vehicle described as a dark-colored sedan, police said.

The Austin Police Department's Vehicular Homicide Unit is leading the South Austin investigation. Authorities have not identified either victim pending family notification, and further details about the I-35 collision - including what led to it and whether the driver involved remained at the scene - were not immediately available, FOX 7 Austin reported. Anyone with information about the South 1st Street hit-and-run is asked to contact Austin police.
