Oilers vs. Rangers: Connor McDavid Scores 50 Seconds In, Extends His Assists Streak to 15 Games, and Edmonton Beats New York 4-1 (AUSTIN CAPITAL NEWS)

Connor McDavid scored a goal and extended his NHL-record season-opening assists streak to 15 games, powering the Edmonton Oilers past the New York Rangers 4-1 on Sunday at Madison Square Garden, the Associated Press reported. The goal, 50 seconds into the game, was the 418th of McDavid's career, passing Glenn Anderson for the fourth most in franchise history, and his eighth goal in the first minute of a game put him past Mark Messier for the most with the Oilers, the AP reported. McDavid is the fastest player in league history to 30 assists and leads all scorers with 39 points.

Edmonton's supporting cast finished the job. Colton Dach scored twice, including an empty-net goal with 39.4 seconds left, and Evan Bouchard had a goal and two assists to join Bobby Orr, Al MacInnis and Denis Potvin as the only defencemen with 25 or more points in his first 15 games, the AP reported. In goal, journeyman Matt Tomkins - making his first start since April 17, 2024, and just the seventh of his NHL career - stopped 27 of the 28 shots he faced and was named the game's first star.

Pavel Dorofeyev scored for the Rangers, who have lost four in a row, the AP reported; New York played without star goaltender Igor Shesterkin, sidelined with a right knee injury, the New York Post reported. Edmonton improved to 7-0 on the road and 11-2-2 overall. The Oilers visit the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday, and the Rangers host the St. Louis Blues the same night.
