ALPHABET — WORST DAY EVER

Alphabet Stock Drop of $500 Billion: Google's Parent Has Its Worst Day Ever Despite Cloud Growth of 103 Percent

The search phrase 'alphabet stock drop 500 billion' is trending in the United States because Thursday was literally Alphabet's worst day since Google went public in 2004: down 12.64 percent, $482 billion gone at the close, on a quarter where revenue rose 25 percent and Cloud more than doubled.

Alphabet Stock Drop of $500 Billion: Google's Parent Has Its Worst Day Ever Despite Cloud Growth of 103 Percent (AUSTIN CAPITAL NEWS)

Alphabet had its worst day ever on Thursday. The Google parent's Class A shares fell 12.64 percent to $283.82 — the biggest one-day drop, in percentage and dollars, since the company went public in 2004 — erasing $482 billion of market value by the close, The Motley Fool reported. Bloomberg's intraday estimate, carried by The Empire Magazine, put the loss at about $511 billion with the shares down about 13 percent mid-morning. Only Nvidia's $593 billion DeepSeek-related drop in January 2025 was larger, according to the Fool.

The quarter underneath the sell-off was not weak on its top lines. Revenue rose 25 percent to $127.6 billion, just under the $128.2 billion analysts expected, and Google Cloud revenue jumped 103 percent, from $15.2 billion to $30.7 billion, on what the company called huge demand for AI infrastructure and AI solutions. Operating income rose 30 percent to $40.6 billion at a 31.8 percent margin.

What investors punished was the cost and the core. Search revenue grew 12 percent to $63.4 billion, a slowdown from 17 percent in the second quarter, feeding the concern that AI answers are eroding the search business that pays for everything. Capital spending hit a record $51.4 billion, more than double the $24 billion of a year ago, and free cash flow was negative $9.1 billion for a second consecutive quarter. Net income fell 25 percent to $26.2 billion and earnings per share fell 26 percent to $2.12, the Fool reported, with an $8.2 billion swing in other expenses against last year's gain.

Management did not blink on spending: Alphabet held its 2026 capital-expenditure guidance at $195 billion to $205 billion, The Empire Magazine reported. For Austin's tech workforce the story is the same one Friday's futures told (SQ-20261030-014) from the other side of the trade — the AI build-out is producing record revenue and record bills at the same time, and this week the market decided to price the bills first.
