Texas Teacher Workforce Funding: Abbott Announces $40 Million PREP Allotment for 411 School Systems
Governor Greg Abbott announced Monday that $40 million will go to 411 Texas school systems through the PREP Program Allotment created by House Bill 2, aimed at teacher recruitment, preparation and mentorship.

AUSTIN — Governor Greg Abbott announced on Monday that $40 million will go to 411 Texas school systems through the Preparing and Retaining Educators through Partnerships (PREP) Program Allotment, funding intended to strengthen teacher recruitment, preparation and mentorship across the state, according to the governor's office.
"Texas educators shape future generations, and it is critical that they enter the classroom ready to succeed," Abbott said in the release. "This investment empowers schools and builds on Texas' efforts to ensure that every student has access to a high-quality education."
Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath said in the same release that strong teachers are the foundation of student success and that the allotment gives school systems resources to recruit talented candidates, provide meaningful preparation and mentorship, and support more educators as they begin their careers.
The PREP allotment was established by House Bill 2, passed by the 89th Texas Legislature and signed into law by Abbott in June 2025. The governor's office describes HB 2 as a record $8.5 billion in new public education funding, including significant investments to support teachers and strengthen the educator pipeline, of which the PREP program is one part.
For Austin-area families, the practical question is which local systems are on the list and what each will do with its share - preparation partnerships and mentorship for new teachers are the program's stated purposes. The governor's office said a complete list of participating districts is posted on the Texas Education Agency's PREP Allotment webpage.
