AUSTIN — President Donald Trump took his midterm tour to Corinth, Mississippi on Monday night, campaigning for U.S. Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith at a Republican event at the Crossroads Arena, eight days before the November 3 midterm elections, according to the Clarion Ledger's live coverage of the event.

Hyde-Smith is running against Democrat Scott Colom and Independent Ty Pinkins. The crowd numbered around 2,000 by 4:30 p.m. Central, when the evening's remarks were set to begin, in an arena with a capacity of about 7,700. Mississippi has no early voting, but residents can vote absentee in a circuit clerk's office through Saturday, October 31.

Hyde-Smith told the crowd her opponent would never outwork her and framed the choice in stark terms. "The choice facing our country right now could not be clearer," she said, describing the election as "socialism vs. capitalism" and "big government vs. the free market." Governor Tate Reeves, speaking before Trump, warned Republicans against complacency: "Next Tuesday is a dangerous day for you to be complacent," he said.

Trump, who left the White House Monday afternoon and was expected to speak at 6 p.m. Central, urged the crowd to elect America First candidates on November 3. "Pretend that I'm on the ballot," he said. The Mississippi stop is part of a national tour to drum up support for Republican candidates across the country in the final stretch of the midterms - the same Election Day, November 3, on which Texas voters, including Travis County's record early-voting electorate, will finish casting their ballots.
