Jumanji: Open World Trailer Drops: The Final Game Spills Into the Real World on Christmas Day
Sony released a new trailer on Wednesday for 'Jumanji: Open World' — a film, not a game — in which the broken console lets Jumanji loose in the real world. Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan return for the final instalment, in theaters December 25.
One last game — and this time it is played in our world. Sony Pictures released a new trailer on Wednesday for Jumanji: Open World, the final instalment of the modern Jumanji films, and 'jumanji open world' climbed into the top U.S. trending searches at 1,000-plus. Despite the phrasing, it is a movie, not a video game release: it opens in theaters on Christmas Day, December 25.
The premise flips the series. In the two previous films, teenagers were pulled into the game; this time the game gets out. According to the coverage of the trailer, the Jumanji console is broken and malfunctioning, the game world enters the real world, and its characters arrive with it — in demo mode. Spencer, played by Alex Wolff, warns that Jumanji has spilt into their world, and a second group is drawn into the game itself while the avatars are loose outside it.
The returning cast is the franchise's core: Dwayne Johnson as Dr. Bravestone, Karen Gillan as Ruby Roundhouse, Kevin Hart as Franklin Finbar and Jack Black as Professor Oberon, with Nick Jonas back as Seaplane McDonough. Alex Wolff, Madison Iseman, Morgan Turner and Ser'Darius Blain return as the players, alongside Danny DeVito, Awkwafina, Rhys Darby, Lamorne Morris and Bebe Neuwirth. Jake Kasdan, who directed both previous modern films, directs and co-wrote this one.
For Austin's holiday moviegoers, the date to circle is December 25. The modern series began with Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle in 2017 and continued with The Next Level in 2019; Sony is billing Open World as the final game.
