I-35 Rolling Closures Tonight: 15-Minute Stoppages Between Lady Bird Lake and Holly Street From 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. (AUSTIN CAPITAL NEWS)

Late-night drivers on I-35 through downtown Austin should expect to stop - briefly, and more than once - on Thursday night. TxDOT Austin's alert lists 15-minute rolling closures in both directions on the I-35 mainlanes and frontage roads between Lady Bird Lake and Holly Street on Thursday, October 29, from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m., for a utility line crossing.

A rolling closure is not a full-night shutdown. Crews stop traffic for up to 15 minutes at a time while the line crosses, then release it, repeating the cycle through the work window. The practical effect is a series of short, unpredictable delays on the mainlanes and the frontage roads at the south edge of downtown - the stretch drivers use for the Holly Street and Riverside exits - rather than a single signed detour, and TxDOT's alert names no detour route.

The work is separate from the second I-35 job already on tonight's calendar: the nightly paving closures between Airport Boulevard and 12th Street, which run 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. and reach their final night on Thursday, with ramp, MLK bridge and frontage closures alongside them. Between the two jobs, the whole downtown I-35 corridor is a work zone on Thursday night.

Drivers who can route around downtown on MoPac or US 183 after 11 p.m. will have the calmer trip. The Traffic Desk will re-check TxDOT's alerts before the evening drive file.
