The paving window TxDOT set for the downtown stretch of I-35 closes tonight. Northbound and southbound lanes, entrance and exit ramps, the MLK bridge and both frontage roads all carry varying closures between Airport Boulevard and 12th Street, from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m.

I-35 Tonight: The Nightly Lane Closures Between Airport Boulevard and 12th Street Run Their Final Night, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. (AUSTIN CAPITAL NEWS)

Downtown I-35's overnight work reaches its last scheduled night on Thursday. TxDOT Austin's alert for the corridor lists varying nightly lane closures on northbound and southbound I-35 between Airport Boulevard and 12th Street for October 26 through 29, running 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. - which makes tonight the final night inside the announced window.

The ramps take as much of it as the main lanes. TxDOT says multiple entrance and exit ramps will be closed for the paving work, and the same alert puts varying nightly lane closures on the MLK bridge and on the northbound and southbound frontage roads. A driver who finds a usual downtown entrance dark tonight is seeing the plan, not an incident.

The practical read for the evening: trips through the corridor before 9 p.m. miss the window entirely, and trips after it should expect lane drops rather than a full closure - 'varying' is TxDOT's own word, and the alert does not close the interstate outright. The frontage roads, the usual escape hatch, are inside the same work zone tonight, so MoPac and Lamar Boulevard are the cleaner north-south alternates while the paving runs.

The window ends at 5 a.m. Friday on the alert's terms. What follows it - whether the paving wraps or a fresh alert extends the work into next week - is a TxDOT announcement this desk has not seen yet, and the morning file will carry it if it comes.
