Cyclist Killed in Loyola Lane Crash Is Austin's 72nd Fatal Crash of 2026, Police Say (AUSTIN CAPITAL NEWS)

A bicycle rider is dead after a collision with a motor vehicle Thursday evening in East Austin, and Austin police are asking anyone who saw it to come forward. Officers responded at about 6:51 p.m. on Thursday, October 29, to the 8400 block of Loyola Lane, where a motor vehicle had struck a pedestrian on a bicycle, the Austin Police Department said in a release published Friday. The rider was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The vehicle and its occupants remained at the scene and are cooperating with the investigation, police said. The department lists the deceased only as an unidentified Black male; no name has been released, and this story does not publish one. Police described their account as an initial assessment and said the investigation is still pending and fatality information may change.

The crash is being investigated as Austin's 72nd fatal crash of 2026, resulting in 74 fatalities, the department said. By the same date in 2025, Austin had recorded 80 fatal crashes resulting in 84 deaths — so this year's toll, while lower, is still running at more than one fatal crash every five days.
