Learjet That Left Austin-Bergstrom Crashes in Florida: All Nine Aboard Killed on a Bahamas-Bound Flight, Federal Officials Say (AUSTIN CAPITAL NEWS)

All nine people aboard a Learjet 60 were killed on Sunday when the aircraft crashed into a mobile home neighborhood in South Florida and erupted in flames, federal officials said, USA TODAY reported. The jet crashed at about 12:50 p.m. Eastern in the area of Military Trail and 10th Avenue North near Greenacres, in Palm Beach County, sparking several fires and scattering debris across a wide area.

The flight began in Austin. The Federal Aviation Administration said the aircraft departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and was headed to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas, USA TODAY reported. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said all nine people aboard were killed, the Palm Beach Post reported. It was not immediately known whether anyone on the ground was injured, USA TODAY reported, and officials had released no names of the people aboard on Sunday night.

The crash caused major destruction in the neighborhood, and the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office closed all lanes of Military Trail between Cresthaven Boulevard and 10th Avenue North, the Post reported. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate, with the NTSB in charge of the investigation and providing all updates. The cause of the crash is unknown, and as of Sunday night there was no indication the jet was shot down, the Post reported.
