Breeders' Cup Classic: Sovereignty Wins at Keeneland and Likely Seals a Second Straight Horse of the Year Title
Sovereignty won the $7 million Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland on Saturday in 2:00.36, beating The Puma and Knightsbridge while defending champion Forever Young finished out of the money — a result USA TODAY reported likely seals a second straight Horse of the Year title.

The biggest race of the fall belonged to the horse who has owned the last two seasons. Sovereignty won the Breeders' Cup Classic at Keeneland on Saturday, covering the mile and a quarter on a fast dirt track in 2:00.36 under jockey Junior Alvarado for trainer Bill Mott, in the $7 million finale of the Breeders' Cup World Championships.
The Puma finished second for jockey Javier Castellano and trainer Gustavo Delgado, and Knightsbridge ran third — giving Mott two of the first three finishers. The defense never materialized: Forever Young, the defending Classic champion and the first Japan-trained winner of the race a year ago, finished unplaced, fifth on Idol Horse's report — the first time in 16 career starts he had finished worse than third.
The standings made the stakes plain before the gate opened. Sovereignty entered the afternoon leading the Horse of the Year standings by a single point, 253 to Forever Young's 252, and USA TODAY reported the Classic win likely seals a second straight Horse of the Year title for the reigning champion. Golden Tempo, the 2026 Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winner, also finished out of the top three.
The Classic capped a nine-race Grade 1 championship program on Saturday. Among the day's other winners, Nitrogen took the Distaff by two lengths over Fully Subscribed in 1:48.90, a year after finishing second in the same race, and Deterministic held off defending champion Notable Speech in the Mile.
