Overnight I-35 Closures Hit South Austin on Tuesday and Wednesday Nights (AUSTIN CAPITAL NEWS)

South Austin drivers get two nights of detours this week. The Texas Department of Transportation says the northbound I-35 mainlanes between Slaughter Lane and William Cannon Drive will close nightly on Tuesday, October 27, and Wednesday, October 28, from midnight to 5 a.m., for work on the elevated managed lanes.

During the closures, northbound drivers leave the mainlanes at the William Cannon Drive exit (Exit 228), continue on the northbound frontage road, and re-enter at the next available entrance ramp, according to TxDOT. Drivers should remain alert, follow the signs and expect delays in the work zone.

The same project keeps the SH 71/Ben White Boulevard flyovers to southbound I-35 on intermittent nightly closures, from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., continuing through late 2026 for bridge column work. Signed detours route eastbound drivers via the South Congress Avenue exit and westbound drivers via the Burleson Road/Woodward Street exit.

The work is part of the I-35 Capital Express South project, which is adding two HOV managed lanes in each direction between SH 71/Ben White Boulevard and SH 45 Southeast, plus a southbound bypass lane at Stassney Lane and William Cannon Drive. Construction began in November 2022 and is scheduled to finish in late 2028, weather permitting.
