Tonight is the night the clocks move. At 2 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, daylight saving time ends in Austin: clocks turn back one hour to 1 a.m., and the city returns to standard time until March. Phones and computers will do it on their own; wall clocks, ovens, microwaves and car clocks are the ones that usually need a hand.

The timing lands in the middle of Austin's longest night of the fall. Halloween falls on a Saturday, Texas plays at home at 6:30 p.m., and APD expects 80,000 to 100,000 people downtown - and the repeated hour gives the whole night an extra hour, a factor downtown commander Christopher Juusola flagged in the department's Halloween planning. Bars, rideshares and anyone driving home should count on the longer night, not just the later clock.

The trade arrives Sunday morning. Sunrise and sunset both come about an hour earlier by the clock from Sunday onward - more light in the morning, less in the evening - and the station's live feed starts Sunday with fog before a high near 80.5. The after-work and after-school evenings get darker from here until spring.

It is also the first clock change of Election Day week. Early voting ended Friday, and Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, with Travis County vote centers open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. under standard time - and, on the current feed, a 71 percent chance of rain. Set the clocks before bed, and set the Tuesday plan with both changes in mind.
